Why is it called a blowjob?

A quick search of this on the Internet will yield almost five million hits in 0.1 second. So many forums have this question posted, and it ranges from health websites to technology websites. Below are some of the “explanations” offered by our online community.

  • In England, a really long time ago, blow was slang for ejaculate.
  • It’s from a time in England when prostitutes were known as blowsies.
  • Linguists think the sexual connotation of “blow job” evolved from “blowoff,” an expression meaning to finish off, to climax, to end.
  • Maybe cause ‘suck job’ doesn’t sound as attractive.
  • Blow Job is slang from 1933, as to blow someone off, originally used among prostitutes.
  • It’s called a blow job, because when you do it, the penis is poking into your cheek, makes your cheeks look like you are blowing.
  • Fellatio was once known as a “below job” for obvious reasons. The term has since been shortened to “b’lowjob” or simply “blowjob”. (According to what I know, “below job” was used a service that prostitutes gave because it wasn’t something a classy woman would do, so therefore, that job was below the norm.)

The etymology of words and slangs has always been fascinating.  In this case, the problem is that there are many debates to justify why the word “blow” is used today.  So many people have wondered this and even some women are worried that they are doing it incorrectly!  I took a quick poll and called up a handful of guy and girl friends to asked them this question.  The guys said, “I don’t know” and the girls said, “I don’t care”.  Even more interestingly, some of the girls also asked how to give better blowjobs too.  It’s no surprise to me, given all of the advice and tips that are printed in magazines and currently existing on the internet, that women can be confused.

Therefore, I have devised an answer that will kill two birds with one stone.  Yes, that’s right – a scientifically explained answer as to why it should be called a blowjob and with that same explanation help women improve their oral sex skills.  Daunting task, huh?  Well, you asked and I delivered.

Blowjobs are slang for fellatio because in the act of performing oral sex, exhaling or blowing, will ease the act taking the penis deeper into the mouth, while reducing choking or gagging reflexes.

If you look at human anatomy and physiology, the throat is like two roads merging together.  In order to prevent getting the airway blocked (choking), the epiglottis, a thin piece of cartilage folds back over and covers the opening to the lungs.  A lot of women end up holding their breaths during a blowjob, which stiffen the oropharynx, a region behind your uvula and above your tonsils.  So this cause women to gag when the penis pushes against that region.  By exhaling, it relaxes the oropharynx, and opens it much wider because the trachea (airway) is a lot bigger than the esophagus (food pipe).

To prove my point, here are some simple exercises you can try.

  1. Hold your breath and try to swallow your saliva. You should be able to do this.
  2. Try swallowing your saliva while exhaling.  You should be able to swallow only after you are finished exhaling, and not during the process of exhaling.
  3. Take your index finger and reach into your mouth as far back as you can – but don’t gag yourself.  Now adjust your finger accordingly as you are breathing in and out of your mouth.  You will notice that as air is being moved, the back of your throat will expand and pull back.  When the air stops, the back of the throat relaxes and touches your finger again.
  4. Trying the same exercise (#3) again, but this time, inhale through your nose and exhale your mouth using short breaths and keep it as continuous as possible.  With practice you can keep your oropharynx, the back of your throat, expanded almost the whole time.

So the main point is that during oral sex, if there is any deep-throating involved, exhaling or “blowing”, is the key to prevent gagging.  Of course, you only have to use this technique for a few seconds for deep penetration – otherwise, mix it up and vary it with your crazy skills.  You’ll be awesome.
